The role of green roofs in urban stormwater management

In the modern urban environment, stormwater management is an increasing challenge. In increasingly built-up areas, the natural drainage of water is hampered: concrete and asphalt pavements prevent rainfall from seeping away and run off quickly, often overloading the sewer system. The result? Flooded streets, damage and reduced groundwater levels.

The Be a Rain Saver campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of urban stormwater management and offer solutions, such as green roofs.

What is a green roof?

A green roof is a roof surface covered with vegetation. Underneath is a layered system that provides living conditions for plants and retains water. In addition to their aesthetic and environmental benefits, green roofs are also key to managing rainwater.

How do green roofs help to conserve rainwater?

  • Water absorption and storage:
Layers of green roofs – such as vegetation, soil mix and waterproofing – can absorb and temporarily store rainwater. This reduces run-off and relieves the drainage system.

  • Evaporation and reuse:
Evaporation from plants and soil releases some water back into the atmosphere, helping to regulate the local microclimate.

  • Slowing down run-off:
Green roofs slow down the run-off of water, giving you the opportunity to use rainwater for other purposes, such as irrigation or cooling.

  • Thermal insulation: they keep you warm in winter and reduce the temperature of the building in summer, saving energy.

  • Air purification: plants trap airborne dust and filter harmful substances.

  • Increasing biodiversity: green roofs provide new habitats for plants and insects in the urban environment.

  • Aesthetic value: they improve the urban landscape, increase property values and create a more pleasant living environment.

How can you be a Rainmaker?

Installing green roofs is no longer an unachievable goal. Many cities offer subsidies for their installation and the technology is becoming more affordable. If you are planning a new building or renovating your existing roof, consider installing a green roof! You can make a difference not only for the environment, but also for your own well-being.

Mitől lesz “szivacs” a város?

Jogos a kérdés. Egyrészt szivacsváros elve válasz a klímaváltozással járó szélsőséges esőzések okozta problémákra, másrészt múltbéli megoldások modern újra értelmezése. A városok egyik problémája, hogy u [...]

A zöld tető jó, a kék-zöld tető mégjobb

Vízérzékeny városok: A “Sydenhamtől Bankstownig” projekt

2018-ban az ausztráliai Cooperative Research Centres Program for Water Sensitive Cities (Vízérzékeny Városok Együttműködési Kutatóközpontja) programja támogatta a Sydenham to Bankstown projekt tervezési folyamatát, amely a legújabb kutatásokat a helyi szakértelemmel ötvözte, hogy közösen dolgozzanak ki gyakorlati ötleteket a városi, vízzel kapcsolatos kihívások kezelésére. A Sydenham to Bankstown folyosó a Greater Sydney Commission's Greater Sydney Region Plan és Eastern City és South Dist [...]
